−『素問』陰陽応象大論篇第五。
「陰をもって陽を知り、陽をもって陰を知る」ことと同様に、左右も表裏一体です。右が痛いと言われたから右ばかりに注意を向けるのではなく、左はどうなっているだろうと考えることで、新しい所見が取れることもあります。表面ばかりではなく、裏から表面を知ることが出来るのも東洋医学の面白いところです。

Just as we understand yin through yang and yang through yin, left and right are two sides of the same coin. Instead of focusing solely on the right side when someone complains of pain there, considering what’s happening on the left side can sometimes lead to new insights. Understanding the surface not only from the surface but also from the underside is one of the fascinating aspects of Oriental medicine.
