63* “By clearly understanding its yin and yang, one can distinguish between softness and hardness.”– “Somon” Yin-Yang-Osho-Tairon Volume 5.

What exactly is this “soft and hard”? It’s not a very familiar term. In the 1663 edition of the Suwen and the Ansei edition of the Suwen, there is only a note stating, “Yin is called soft, Yang is called hard.” In the Huangdi Neijing Suwen Yanjie, it states that “there is hardness and softness in both the yin and yang of form and qi.” In form, it is yang soft and yin hard, and in qi, it is yang hard and yin soft. It also states that “to distinguish between hard and soft is to distinguish between the internal organs.” Since form (yin) and qi (yang) have opposite properties, hardness and softness may also be one way of distinguishing between yin and yang.
