−『素問』陰陽応象大論篇第五。
『孫子』には「彼を知り己を知れば、百戦殆うからず」という有名な言葉があります。これは戦いに勝つ為の言葉です。「敵のことも味方のことも両方知っていれば、必ず勝てる」という意味です。今回の条文は、それとは少し違います。「自分を使って患者さんを診て、表（症状）からその裏（陰＝五蔵の変化）を知る」ことが大事であると書かれています。
表に現れているものだけが全てと考えがちですが、人間、そう単純ではないですよね。

Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” contains the famous saying, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” This is a saying for winning battles. It means that if you know both your enemy and your allies, you will surely win. The passage we are discussing today is a little different. It says that it is important to “use yourself to examine patients and understand the underlying causes (yin = changes in the five internal organs) from the surface (symptoms).”
We tend to think that what’s visible on the surface is everything, but people aren’t that simple, are they?
